Sandwich UK

Research began at our Sandwich base in 1957, with a team of just six scientists. Now, it's our European R&D headquarters, employing approximately 3,500 people.

Occupying 335 acres, and comprising 2.7million square feet of laboratory space, the site has seen huge investment over the past decade. In fact, since 1998, Pfizer has invested more than £1billion in the UK, the majority of which has been spent on expanding research facilities at the Sandwich site. In 2001, it opened new, state-of-the-art buildings including new laboratories, at a total cost of £361 million. And then in 2006 alone Pfizer spent more than £550 million here – more than £10 million a week.

Sandwich is the global research hub for four of our key therapy areas: Pain; Allergy and Respiratory; Anti-virals; and Genitourinary and Sexual Health. It is also where the Research headquarters of our global Vaccine network is located, and where medicines for gastrointestinal diseases and liver fibrosis are developed. Four PGRD Centres of Emphasis (CoEs) are here too: Discovery High Throughput Screening (HTS); Absorption; Drug Metabolism & Excretion (ADME) HTS; and Inhalation Devices.

Internationally renowned, the Sandwich laboratories have a remarkable track record of discovering new medicines that improve public health, including some of Pfizer's most important medicines. They include Celsentri® (maraviroc), the first new oral class of HIV treatment in more than a decade; Revatio® (sildenafil) for the rare condition of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH); Diflucan and Vfend® (voriconazole), two life-saving anti-fungal medicines; Istin and Cardura, for the treatment of cardiovascular disease; and Viagra® (sildenafil) for erectile dysfunction.

Close to the sea and within easy reach of London and Europe, Sandwich is picturesque and only 12 miles from the historic city of Canterbury. From flexible hours to health and fitness centres, and sports and recreational opportunities, we strive to meet our teams' needs for a balanced life through a wide range of facilities and services here.
